Q:
When billing for an MRI of the brain with & without contrast material (70553),
can you also bill with HCPCS code A4647 for the contrast material?
A:
A4647 specifies "paramagnetic contrast material".
Section 15022 of the Medicare Carrier's Manual (MCM)
specifically states that the payment for the technical component of 70553 includes payment for
paramagnetic contrast material and instructs carriers
not to make separate payment.
It is a good idea to have on hand the "HCPCS Level II Expert" book
published by St. Anthony's/Medicode as it indicates relevant areas in the
MCM that address specific HCPCS codes. Local Carrier Medical Review policies are also helpful
in determining coverage issues and may also direct you to appropriate sections of the MCM.
