Effective January 1, 2007 Medicare is implementing a revised HCFA 1500 format to allow addition of the National Provider Identifier (NPI). Medicare will begin testing claims processing using NPI numbers along with legacy Provider ID numbers in January for a final implementation date of 5/23/2007. Commercial plans may choose to implement earlier, but must accept the NPI no later than 5/23/2007. Once fully implemented, the NPI replaces all other provider IDs with payors. Computer/Practice Management Software vendors and clearinghouses should be prepared for this by January 1. Providers who have not applied for their NPI number should do so ASAP to avoid the rush. Since May 1, 2006 providers cannot make a change to their enrollment or apply for a new Medicare number without the NPI. CMS will also begin a system of verifying the provider information for all physicians in their system, especially those that have been participating prior to the implementation of the new enrollment system in October of 2000. If a physician is reassigning payments to a Practice Tax ID number, the Practice entity must also apply for a number to link to the physician’s NPI.
